Why was my Juuli Business card declined? Common reasons and fixes
If a card payment didn't go through, it's almost always one of a short list of reasons — and most of them you can fix yourself in a minute. Here's how to work out which one, and what to do about it.
The quick checklist
A Juuli card payment is declined when one of these is true, checked roughly in this order:
- Not enough balance on the card — top up first.
- A spending limit was reached — per-transaction, daily, or monthly.
- The card is frozen or cancelled.
- The merchant is in a restricted category — some categories are blocked for everyone.
- A security or region block — fraud protection or an unsupported region.
- An online payment wasn't confirmed — the 3D Secure step wasn't completed.
1. Not enough balance
Juuli Business cards are prepaid — each card spends from the balance loaded onto it. If the card balance (including fees) doesn't cover the payment, it's declined. Top up the card and try again. The first top-up can take up to about an hour; later top-ups usually complete within around 10 minutes. If you just topped up, wait for it to arrive before retrying — don’t top up again.

2. A spending limit was reached
Every card can have its own per-transaction, daily, and monthly limits. If a payment would push the card past any limit you've set, it's declined automatically. Open the card in Financial Accounts → Cards, review its limits, and raise them if you need to — changes apply right away.

3. The card is frozen or cancelled
A frozen card declines every payment and withdrawal until you unfreeze it. Check the card's status in the app and unfreeze it if you froze it earlier. A cancelled card can't be reactivated — you'll need to create a new one.

4. The merchant is in a restricted category
For security and compliance, some types of merchant are blocked for every Juuli card and will always be declined — this isn't a setting you (or we) can switch on for an individual card. Blocked categories include:
- Gambling, betting, casinos, and lotteries
- Cryptocurrency exchanges and trading
- Money transfer, money orders, and stored-value or prepaid-card loading
- Cash advances and quasi-cash from financial institutions
If your payment was declined at one of these, that's expected behaviour and the card will keep declining there. This mirrors our Acceptable Use Policy.
5. A security or region block
Juuli's fraud protection can decline a payment that looks risky — for example, an unusual merchant, country, or currency, or a pattern our monitoring flags. Some regions and currencies are also not supported. If you believe a legitimate payment was blocked this way, contact support and we'll take a look.
6. An online payment wasn't confirmed (3D Secure)
Some online payments ask you to confirm the transaction with a 3D Secure step. If that confirmation isn't completed, the payment is declined. Make sure your phone number and email in the app are up to date so you always receive the confirmation prompt, then retry the payment.
How to tell which reason applied
Open Financial Accounts → Cards, select the card, and review its recent transactions — the declined attempt appears there. Check it against the list above: the card's balance, limits, and frozen/active status are all visible in the app. If none of those explain it, it's most likely a restricted merchant category or a security block — contact us and we'll confirm the exact reason.
Your Juuli card is issued through our regulated payment partner on the Visa network. Juuli is a regulated platform, not a bank — e-money and payment services are provided by Stripe Technology Europe, Limited, authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland.
